Forehead Slappers, 1Q14 Edition

Liberty Counsel head Mat Staver sounded the warning this week that with full marriage equality, everyone is just going to decide to marry someone of the same sex, and that of course means that society will “cease to exist” altogether. The whole country will become a childless, disease-ridden dystopia, he told Vic Eliason of VCY America. [Alternet, 28 December 2013]

Jim Bopp, an anti-LGBT attorney who was forced out as Indiana’s representative to the Republican National Committee in 2012, told the Indiana House Judiciary Committee that LGBT people are so intolerant that they can’t abide a marriage ban—whereupon the gallery broke out laughing so hard the chair had to call for order. [Crooks and Liars, 13 January 2014]

Rep. Joel Kleefisch proposed to the Wisconsin legislature a bill that multimillionaire Michael Eisenga and his lawyer helped write. The law would cap the income level at $150,000 for determining child support levels. This would mean that Eisenga, worth $20M, and with a long record of shady behavior, could limit his own child support payments to a fraction of what is due under current law. Rep. Darrell Issa is at it again in his unrelentingly sleazy campaign to manufacture trouble for all things Obama. Issa, as chair of of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, subpoenaed documents with unredacted code for the site. This ostensibly to protect the site’s security, although there have been zero security breaches. The responsible agency informed Issa through three separate letters that the info he wanted could cause irreparable damage. Issa, however, has an unpleasant habit of subpoena to get sensitive info, then leaking it, thus providing valuable info to hackers and criminals. Sure enough, some of it soon appeared online. “If I was a woman over 50, I wouldn’t need gynecological services”. Rep. Alan Rothlesberg, at a House committee meeting, 14 January 2014.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) is always good for a laugh. This time he says that the federal government uses welfare to “lure” women into “servitude” (to the Democratic government). [Daily Kos, 23 January 2014] Apparently, all women who become single mothers contrive to get that way so they can live a life of luxury without actually having to work. The Republican assumption, of course, is that most of them are African-American, lacking in any sense of responsibility.

Mary Helen Sears, who currently serves as the vice-chair of the Michigan Republican Party‘s 1st District, posted a viciously homophobic rant on her county’s Republican website last April. In it she claimed that homosexuals prey on young children, and said that “Satan uses homosexuality to attack the living space of the Holy Spirit.” She obviously fails to understand that pedophilia and homosexuality are different things. [Crooks & Liars, 11 February 2014] She also claimed that Communist college professors were indoctrinating young people, and that Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory “gave rise to Hitler’s Third Reich, Mussolini’s Italy and Stalin’s Russia.”

Tom Rooney, a Tea Partier from Florida said, “To help pay for his health care law, the president made deep cuts to the successful Medicare Advantage program”. What the President proposed and what Rooney and the rest of his fellow Republicans voted for was designed to not only save Medicare money but to ensure its solvency. Rooney personally voted for the same cuts three times. [Crooks & Liars, 17 February 2014]

Utah State Rep. Jerry Anderson introduced a bill that would change the definition of an air contaminant to exclude “natural components of the atmosphere,” such as carbon dioxide, from being defined as contaminants. He claimed we could have twice as much carbon dioxide as now.

Stupidity marches on.

  1. You do wonder that Jimmy Kimmel isn’t rushing to sign these guys up to be laughed at for real, eh? And here, my personal hope was that everyone marrying gay would mean civilization does not END, but is better dressed and groomed. I know, I know…stereotypes. But, dude, I already own the flannel shirt and hiking boots I will need to attract a good woman!
